Original description: Ambulyx astygonus Boisduval, [1875]. Hist. Nat. Insectes (Spec. Gen. Lepid. Heteroceres). 1: 188.


Synonymous species: none


Type specimen locality: Brazil


Distribution: P.astygonus appears to have a restricted range in central South America, and in Brazil has only been recorded in the North-east and South-east regions.

Type specimen locality: Para, Brazil


Distribution: found from Colombia to Bolivia, and in Brazil in the North and North-east regions.

Distribution: recorded widely across Central and South America, and in Brazil has been reported from all 5 regions.

Distribution: recorded widely from Mexico to Argentina, and in Brazil has been and reported from all 5 regions.

Type specimen locality: Aroa, Venezuela


Distribution: recorded from Venezuela, French Guiana, Bolivia and in the North, West-central and South-east regions of Brazil.


Adhemarius daphne daphne (Boisduval, [1875])                                 Common name: none


Original description: Ambulyx daphne Boisduval, [1875]. Hist. Nat. Insectes (Spec. Gen. Lepid. Heteroceres). 1: 184.


Synonymous species: none


Type specimen locality: Brazil


Distribution: A.daphne has been split from gannascus (see below). The subspecies A.d.interupta occurs in Central America and Mexico and A.d.cubanus in Cuba. The nominate race probably occurs in all 5 regions of Brazil but has only been confirmed from the North, South and South-east regions..

Original description: Sphinx gannascus Stoll, 1790. Uitlandsche Kapellen (Papillons exot.) (suppl.). 157, pl. 35, fig 3.

 

Synonymous species: Ambulyx janus (Boisduval, [1875]); Ambulyx rostralis (Boisduval, 1870); Amplypterus germanus (Zikan, 1934)


Type specimen locality: Venezuela


Distribution: the Adhemarius gannascus complex has recently been revised (Vaglia, T. & Haxaire, J. 2005) requiring the re-labelling of museum specimens. Gannascus occurs from Mexico to south-east Brazil and Paraguay and the north of Argentina. It probably occurs in every Brazilian region but  this may need to be re-considered in light of the separation of Adhemarius daphne.

Synonymous species: Ambulyx crethon (Boisduval, [1875]); Ambulyx schausi (Rothschild, 1894)


Type specimen locality: Venezuela


Distribution: recorded from the north of South America down to Paraguay. In Brazil it occurs in North, South and South-east Brazil. It appears to favour higher altitudes (pers. comm.).

Type specimen locality: Rio de Janeiro [Brazil]


Distribution: recorded from the northern countries of South America south to Bolivia. In Brazil it has only been recorded from the North, South and South-east regions.

Type specimen locality: Brazil


Distribution: A. palmeri occurs widely across South America from the north to Uruguay, and has been recorded from all regions of Brazil with the exception of West-central.

Distribution: recorded from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, French Guiana, Suriname and the Northern region of Brazil.

Synonymous species: Ambulyx tithonus (Kirby, 1886)


Type specimen locality: Brazil  


Distribution: the species has been recorded from Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. The nominate species occurs in West-central, South and South-eastern Brazil but is replaced by the subspecies Orecta lycidas eos (Burmeister, 1878) in Argentina and Uruguay.
